The funeral director scanned the invoice, double-checking the spelling of the name. He turned to his office manager, handing her back the pen after he signed near the bottom.
"What a shame, eh?"
"She was young, wasn't she?" The office manager said, reaching for the paperwork.
"Yeah. Like that family hasn't been through enough." He gestured to the name specified on the invoice. "See the headstone? Do you recognize the last name?"
She glanced down at the invoice. "Oh no! His mother?"
"The same. She took a turn for the worse after the boy died. They thought she was going to beat it, but she went downhill pretty quickly."
"Wasn't it some kind of accident?"
"The worst kind.” The funeral director replied, shaking his head. “She was up all night because of the chemo, and she was running from the bedroom into the bathroom to go throw up. The kid had a habit of sneaking out of his bed and into theirs, and they collided in the hallway. He wound up going end-over-end down the stairway and broke his neck."
"Oh, my God!"
"Yeah, they never got over it. The husband left her a year or so after, but she got steadily sicker from the day they buried the kid."
The manager slid the invoice into a file folder on her desk. "I suppose it's better that they're together now."
"Better?" he shrugged. "I guess it's as close to a happy ending as this story gets."
